Tips for Using Your Health Insurance

  • Choose generic drugs at the pharmacy instead of name brands – even ask your doctor about over-the-counter remedies that don’t require a prescription at all.
  • Stay in shape – exercise regularly, eat a balanced diet and watch your weight.
  • Carefully review all medical bills and explanations of benefits (EOB’s) you receive. Check them for accuracy and dispute any errors.
  • Develop a comfortable working relationship with your doctor.
  • Keep track of your personal health history. Know and understand your medications. Become familiar with what they do, and know your dosage. Follow your doctor’s orders concerning your medications, getting enough rest, etc.
  • Get only the tests you need, and the most accurate results.
  • Find self-help groups for the support you need. Find reliable health information on the Internet.
  • Make informed decisions about elective (non-emergency) surgery. Question the medical services you receive, and remember you can always refuse treatment that is unnecessary.
  • Use urgent care centers instead of the emergency room for non-life-threatening injuries or illnesses.
  • Always verify for yourself whether a physician or facility is in your PPO network.
  • Know your benefit plan, and read your Certificate of Coverage so you’ll be better informed.
